New York affordable-luxury hotels: a VIP trip without the price-tag

It’s a well-known fact that New York is not a cheap city; long gone are the days of saving on the pound to dollar exchange rate and shopping your heart out on Fifth Avenue.

However, there are still some savvy ways to enjoy a little luxury in New York. Eric from NewYork.co.uk has a few tips up his sleeve that will take your New York hotel stay from ‘sparing the bucks’ to feeling ‘super luxe’.

First things first, for affordable luxury in New York, catch the worm and book early!

For me, luxury means relaxing, and something I tell everyone who comes to me for tips on planning a New York trip, is that booking ahead, saves time, money and stress. By booking early you can stretch your budget that little bit further, ensuring that you get a reasonable price on those luxury items and experiences. What does luxury mean to you?

Luxury is… enjoying unique art & design

For some, luxury can mean exquisite art and design. Luckily, the art scene in New York City is thriving, with galleries and museums regularly curating world-class collections.

The largest museum in the city- The Metropolitan Museum – is New York’s answer to the Louvre. With artifacts from ancient Egypt, armour from medieval Europe, fashion, photography and contemporary art, there’s something for everyone. For your dose of luxury, take the early morning VIP tour before the museum opens to the public.

Not only is there an abundance of museums in the city, but many boutique and design hotels have also started invested in art, sculpture, and unique pieces. Here are some of my favourite spots:

You don’t need to fork out lots of cash to surround yourself with exquisite works of art, the luxurious Chambers hotel is both affordable and a veritable gallery of modern art pieces. These are David Rockwell designed accommodations, just a short walk from Central Park and steps from the luxurious designer boutiques on 5th Avenue. The Chambers hotel is a modern sanctuary, and New York’s art scene is perfectly embodied at this hotel with their eclectic collection of over 500 original works exhibited throughout.

With their contemporary rooms, beautiful art collection, and fantastic location steps from Times Square, MoMA and Rockefeller Center, this hotel is an art lovers dream!

Located in New York’s edgiest neighbourhood, it’s no surprise that Hotel Indigo took inspiration from the graffitied streets of its Lower East Side location for their interior design concept. Art is at the forefront of this hotel’s aesthetic, with a custom mural by graffiti icon Lee Quiñones, and the bright rooms offering locally-influenced design, each with a modern feel and a pop of colour.

The 14th- floor lobby at Hotel Indigo has panoramic city views, so head to the rooftop for a cocktail or a dip in the pool and to admire the cityscape VIP style.

Luxury is… receiving five-star service

Five-star hotels are undoubtedly the ultimate in luxury travel. My advice to you? Make the most of seasonal savings to experience five star luxury hotels in New York for less. If you don’t have an unlimited budget, consider planning your trip during the ‘off season’. Between January and March, you can get some very reasonable deals on travel and accommodation.

Not only is it a time of year when hotel prices are at their lowest, there is also a lot to do in the city. There’s a higher chance of snow, which turns Central Park into a winter wonderland. Strap on some skates and head to Bryant Park or Central Park to skate amongst the skyscrapers. Or, if you prefer to watch from the sidelines, ice hockey season is in full swing during this time too. Head to Madison Square Garden and see the Rangers play. The atmosphere at a hockey game is fantastic; even if you don’t like sports, it’s a fun night out for all.

Here are some hotel options that, when booked off-season, can allow you to enjoy five-star luxury at an affordable price.

Located at Columbus Circle above a designer shopping center and opposite Central Park, you really get your money’s worth in this five-star location. The Mandarin Oriental is walking distance of Times Square and Broadway and with a subway station on the doorstep, access to the whole city is no problem from here.

The hotel itself exudes opulent New York glamour, with indulgently large rooms and suites, all decorated in a chic, oriental style. A fantastic restaurant overlooks Columbus Circle and Central Park, and an indoor pool with panoramic city views let’s you feel like a true VIP.

Situated right next to one of New York’s most popular parks, the High Line, The Standard is a cool hotel, with a cool style, in a cool neighbourhood. With no lack of amenities, the 338 modernly minimalistic guest rooms have floor to ceiling windows and fantastic views over the city or the Hudson River.

If you don’t fancy leaving the hotel, you can relax in the hotel’s very own German beer garden on the ground level, or party at their world-famous club, Le Bain, on the top floor. And in the winter months, the hotel even boasts its own ice rink!

Luxury is… experiencing incredible views

A real luxury in the city is to see the amazing views from high up in your own hotel suite, or hotel terrace. And as far as hotels with views go, the options are endless if you have an unlimited budget. But if you’re looking for something affordable with luxury views included, here are my recommendations:

For some old-school New York glamour and a great location, the Wyndham New Yorker is a great option, located close to Penn Station and within walking distance of Times Square. The art-deco style building dates back to 1930 and was once the tallest building in the city. For great views, book one of the higher-level rooms with a balcony and a view of the Empire State Building- you won’t regret it!

High-tech features and virtual reality experiences are the newest form of tourist attractions in New York. From seeing the vast world below the ocean in virtual reality on Times Square at Ocean Odyssey, to testing your own American Football skills and knowledge at the NFL Experience.

There are a few hotels in the city that offer a modern take on the hotel experience, with gadget and high-tech features adding a touch of pure luxury to your stay.
